Standard Question: Text Fields
This article will help you setup a Text fields (also called Text Inputs, Verbatims, Open Ends).
Background
You may need to add the ability to have a respondent type in text in order to describe or elaborate on certain topics. These are referred to as Text Fields, Text Inputs, Open Ends or Verbatims. This article will show you how to add these to your survey.
NOTE: These question types have a limit of 4000 characters.
Adding a Text Field Question
- If you have not created a question before, please see the following article before you begin
- The 'New Question' box will then appear
- Edit the question number if necessary.
- Select 'Standard' from the Question Menu (default Menu)
- Select 'Text fields'
- Click 'Create'
You can use this question type in numerous ways. By default you will have 1 response option. You will need at least one for this to work. Below are some of the ways you can utilize it.
- If you want one smaller sized text box...
- Click on the overall gear icon to open the Overall Question Settings
- Select your 'Response Label Position'. This controls the position of the response text, should you need it. If you have none, select 'Right'
- You are done.
- If you want a Text Area (larger text box)
- Click on the overall gear icon to open the Overall Question Settings
- Select your 'Response Label Position'. This controls the position of the response text, should you need it. If you have none, select 'Right'
- Select your 'Text Input Type'. The default is 'Text Box' but switching to 'Text Area' will make it a large box, usually for larger open ends.
- If you have a list of smaller open end boxes (usually for unaided awareness)
- Add your list of responses, if any
- Click on the overall gear icon to open the Overall Question Settings
- Select the 'Response Label Position' needed.
